Tonality of Atonement – Lead Sheet and Kenny Kirkland solo transcription

Below is a lead sheet for the Kenny Kirkland original “Tonality of Atonement” and transcription of Kirkland’s solo as played on the 1991 Charles Fambrough album “The Proper Angle”.  I was not able to find a recording online, but it’s worth purchasing for this track alone.

Check out my other Kenny Kirkland transcriptions.

Highway 54 – Greg Skaff (Corrected)

So, something cool happened to me recently (besides meeting Jason Crane of the Jazz Session podcast, http://thejazzsession.com/ , at the Detroit Jazz Festival today.  Awesome podcast – check it out!  Tons of half hour and hour-long interviews with jazz legends).  Back in February I posted a transcription of a tune in 5/4 by the great New York-based guitarist Greg Skaff (check out his newest album, 116th & Park) As it turns out, I made a few harmonic errors in my transcription and Mr. Skaff was kind enough to provide me with a corrected leadsheet.  I’ve updated the sheet on Scribd and the corrections should be evident below.  Many thanks to Mr. Skaff for the leadsheet!

Greg Skaff – Highway 54

Hello again – I’ve been working on tunes in odd meters, so below is a transcription of Greg Skaff’s tune “Highway 54” as played on the album “Blues For Mr. T”.  It’s a nice tune in 5/4 and you can hear it here.  I was going to post a transcription of Dave Holland’s tune Processional, which is another great tune in 5/4, but Dave Holland has lead sheets available on his website to download so it doesn’t seem right, but it’s a great tune to check out.

Without A Trace – There Is No Greater Love contrafact

Below is a transcription of “Without a Trace” a contrafact of “There Is No Greater Love” written by Jerry Bergonzi, as played on the trio record “The Line Between” with Bruce Gertz and Bob Kaufman.

Channeling – Jerry Bergonzi Alone Together contrafact

This is a lead sheet to Jerry Bergonzi’s tune “Channeling” which is a contrafact to the jazz standard “Alone Together”.  I took this off Alex Riel’s CD “UnRiel” and you can hear the tune here.  Bergonzi has also recorded it on the album “Wiggy”.

He’s Dead Too – Jerry Bergonzi – Lady Bird contrafact

Below is a transcription of the melody to “He’s Dead Too“, a tune by Jerry Bergonzi.  The tune is a contrafact of Tadd Dameron’s tune “Lady Bird” (see also: “Half Nelson“).  “He’s Dead Too” is from the Alex Riel album “Unriel” which is a pretty solid album, featuring Mike Stern on guitar, Eddie Gomez on bass, Michael Brecker and Jerry Bergonzi alternating on sax, and Niels Lan Doky on piano.  Enjoy!

Strollin’ – Horace Silver

Hello again.  This is quickly turning into a Horace Silver transcription website – but what can you do, that’s what I’m into right now.  Below is a lead sheet to the Horace Silver tune Strollin’ from the album Horace Scope.  The album features some great trumpet work by the always-fantastic Blue Mitchell.  Check out the whole thing if you get the chance.  Enjoy!

The Kicker – Joe Henderson

Last post of the night – still with the Horace Silver theme.  Below is a lead sheet to Joe Henderson’s “The Kicker” as played on the wonderful Horace Silver album Song For My Father.   The notations at the bottom of the staff are the rhythm section hits – I know it muddles up the lead sheet a little bit, but I couldn’t think of a better way to convey this information and keep it to one page.  Enjoy!
