Steepian Faith – Kenny Kirkland’s Piano Solo

Hey again – still currently on a Kenny Kirkland kick, so here’s more Kenny.  This solo was played on a bootleg recording of the Branford Marsalis quartet at the Bottom Line in New York city on September 24, 1988.  The tune is an original of Kenny’s and he’s killin’ it.  Check out the infamous Kenny diminished lick (bar 9, beats 2-3).  Enjoy!

Yes Or No – Kenny Kirkland Solo Transcription

Below is a transcription of Kenny Kirkland’s piano solo on Wayne Shorter’s tune “Yes or No” from the great Branford Marsalis album Random Abstract.  This solo is full of great Kenny-isms.  Bars 27, 72, and 157 have a triad pair lick that Kenny was fond of, bar 35 has the diminished lick Kenny often played, and the solo is full of superimposed meters, which Kenny often did – check out the superimposed 6 over 4 in bars 43-47, 5 over 4 in bars 87-93 and 174-180, and 3 over 4 in bars 113-123 and 143-147.  Tons of great stuff in this solo.  Check out the whole track here.  Enjoy!

Kenny Kirkland – Mr. J.C. Solo Transcription

Below is a transcription of Kenny Kirkland’s solo on “Mr. J.C.” from Kenny Kirkland’s 1991 self-titled release.  The entire CD is incredible, but Kenny’s solo is burnin.  My favorites – Measures 47-49, the sideslip to B Major in measure 53, and the superimposed 7 in bars 166-177.
