Tonality of Atonement – Lead Sheet and Kenny Kirkland solo transcription

Below is a lead sheet for the Kenny Kirkland original “Tonality of Atonement” and transcription of Kirkland’s solo as played on the 1991 Charles Fambrough album “The Proper Angle”.  I was not able to find a recording online, but it’s worth purchasing for this track alone.

Black Nile – Kenny Kirkland’s Piano Solo

Hello again – below is a transcription of Kenny Kirkland’s piano solo on Wayne Shorter’s tune “Black Nile” as played on Jeff ‘Tain’ Watts’ 1993 trio album “Megawatts”.  It’s full of great Kenny-isms.  Bars 25-26 have a descending scalar pattern that Kenny was fond of, bar 34 and bar 142 have a diminished lick that Kenny tends to play, bar 46 has THE Kenny diminished lick, bar 60 has a 4ths-based shape that Kenny often played, bars 73-74 has a similar scalar pattern, only ascending instead of descending; the scalar pattern also appears in bars 119-123.  Enjoy!

Steepian Faith – Kenny Kirkland’s Piano Solo

Hey again – still currently on a Kenny Kirkland kick, so here’s more Kenny.  This solo was played on a bootleg recording of the Branford Marsalis quartet at the Bottom Line in New York city on September 24, 1988.  The tune is an original of Kenny’s and he’s killin’ it.  Check out the infamous Kenny diminished lick (bar 9, beats 2-3).  Enjoy!
